No, the "damsel in distress" we meet isn't Anthy Himemiya, and no, the lead is likely not pulling a sword out of her bosom. The styling, however, complete with Portland roses and symbolism, is half Emma Bull and half Ikuhara. Add in a dash of Vampire the Masquerade courts meet fae meet political machinations, and you've got a hell of a ride.
The surrealism, the lush detail, and the loving attention to local Portland culture makes this a damn good debut worthy of attention.
City of Roses reads as a flicker of sharp impressionistic scenes skittering atop a deeply imagined alternate present. It is fast, funny, sexy, and sometimes violent, with characters who are both sympathetic and estranging. The prose is good enough to be almost invisible.
The book works a territory reminiscent of the the one John Crowley laid out in "Little Big". If you like writers like Crowley, China Mieville, Neil Gaiman, Gene Wolfe and Jack Vance, you will have a very good time reading this.
Look we can use the words "urban fantasy" for whatever we collectively decide. And we have so decided, and we do so use. Vampires and romance and co-dependence and demons, which is fine.
But! If you recall the days when a handful of writers from Minneapolis were writing this stuff they called urban fantasy, and it was full of faeries and danger and electric guitars? And Charles de Lint was doing the same thing up in Canada? And if you think John Ford died too young? You might want to give City of Roses a try. I think you definitely want to give it a try, in fact, no "might" about it. I've been known to be wrong but I'm right this time.
I'm not comparing Kip Manley to John Ford or Emma Bull or anyone like that, mind you. This isn't a retro window into the past. It's what urban fantasy might be now, if it'd gone in different directions. Don't bring in all the expectations I'm heaping on top of his head, he doesn't deserve that. Just read and enjoy. There's swordplay. It's good stuff.
